Urge Congress to support the Employee Free Choice Act!

To get ahead economically, working people need the freedom to choose for themselves whether to join together in unions to bargain for better wages and benefits. But the current system for forming unions and bargaining is broken. Corporations routinely intimidate, harass, coerce and even fire workers for trying. As a result, good jobs are vanishing and health care coverage and retirement security are slipping out of reach.

That’s a big part of why we elected a new Congress in November. Now it’s time to make sure the 110th Congress works for working families.

CLICK HERE to Take Action and sign the petition below to urge your U.S. representative to support the Employee Free Choice Act. This legislation would restore workers’ freedom to form unions and bargain by strengthening penalties for companies that coerce or intimidate workers, establishing mediation and binding arbitration when the employer and workers cannot agree on a first contract and enabling workers to form unions when a majority signs union authorization cards.

I am signing this petition to urge you to support the Employee Free Choice Act.

Working people are struggling to make ends meet these days, and our middle class is disappearing. The best opportunity for working people to get ahead economically is to unite and bargain with employers for better wages and benefits.

But the current system for forming unions and bargaining is broken. Corporations routinely block workers' freedom to decide for themselves whether to form unions to bargain by intimidating, harassing, coercing and even firing workers.

The Employee Free Choice Act would restore workers' freedom to make their own choice about whether to have a union and bargain for a better life--without interference from management. The legislation, which enjoyed bipartisan support in the 109th Congress, would:

* Strengthen penalties for companies that coerce or intimidate workers,

* Establish mediation and binding arbitration when the employer and workers cannot agree on a first contract

* And enable workers to form unions when a majority signs union authorization cards.

Today, CEOs get contracts that protect their pay and benefits--but they fight tooth and nail to keep workers from having the same opportunity. As a result, good jobs are vanishing and health care coverage and retirement security are slipping out of reach. Only 38 percent of the public says their families are getting ahead financially, and less than a quarter believes the next generation will be better off.

I urge you to support the Employee Free Choice Act to give working families an opportunity for a better life, level the playing field for workers and employers and help rebuild America's working class.

Apollo Alliance commends legislators' strong policy initiatives

The Washington State Labor Council was the first AFL-CIO state federation in the nation to pass a resolution in 2003 in support of the Apollo Alliance on renewable energy. (See WSLC President Rick Bender's Apollo op-ed that year in the News Tribune.) The following press release was distributed Thursday by the Apollo Alliance:

The Apollo Alliance today praised Gov. Christine Gregoire, State Sen. Eric Poulsen (D-Seattle) and King County Executive Ron Sims for taking the lead in their state to battle the growing climate crisis by announcing their commitment to push bold new energy policies.

The new initiatives, including an executive order issued by Gov. Gregoire, outline a plan for more comprehensive climate legislation to reduce global warming pollution, decrease our dependence on foreign oil, and bring more clean energy jobs to the state to promote a successful clean energy economy. They join City of Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels initiatives and commitments to accelerate development of clean energy and transportation solutions.

"The state of Washington continues to light the path towards sustainable energy independence,” said Jerome Ringo, president of the Apollo Alliance. “The leadership of Gov. Gregoire, Sen. Poulsen and County Executive Sims is putting Washington’s economy on a new footing and creating opportunities for working men and women across the state.”

The governor’s executive order calls for a stakeholder process to develop more comprehensive climate legislation for 2008 that addresses the burgeoning climate change crisis.  The executive order also calls for a reduction in fuel imports of 20 percent from current levels by 2020, saving the state nearly $2 billion, and expanding the clean energy sector by aiming to triple the number of clean energy jobs in the state.

The Apollo Alliance is a broad coalition that unites nearly 16 million union members and 11 million environmental organization members across the country dedicated to creating new jobs, new energy and new independence for America by investing in the domestic clean energy sector.
